One day Google Sheets seemed to stop working properly. While loading up any spreadsheet, the content first seemed okay, but then the “working” label appeared for a short time and most of the cell contents disappeared or looked to be empty and crossed out at the same time. In the function box, the content was okay, but the spreadsheet was completely useless. The problem was not present in Firefox, only in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling my extensions and even deleted the config directory of Chrome in my home directory, but nothing helped. A few days passed and I realized that the only thing different about my computer is that I installed the AMDGPU-PRO driver for my video card in Ubuntu. The solution was pretty simple after this, I just had to disable hardware acceleration in Chrome.
How to do it yourself?
- Open your Chrome settings by clicking on the 3 dots next top your profile picture at the top right corner of the Chrome window
- Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and click the advanced settings option
- Uncheck “Hardware acceleration” in the System block
